Couple of days ago, I was procrastinating by checking out a job board for location-independent gigs when the words "copywriter wanted" caught my attention.

The gig turned out to be for an agency handling very formal matters. The gig description was the typical description and could be summarized as "if we work together, reply to our emails, deliver high-quality and you good fam".

Then they told readers to submit full application incl. motivation letter, resume and other documents nobody ever enjoys reading.

I didn't really want the gig (given the stiff tone) but wanted to see what reaction I could get by doing the opposite they expected. So I typed up a charming email, complete with unrelated pictures and whatnot.

Their reaction astounded me. Not only did they want to get me on board for a test assignment, my charming email even got me past their whole selection process without a single one of the requested documents.

So yes, the Charm Offensive approach WORKS, even outside of the hip world of marketing agencies and software startups. Even where the opposite is expected.
