When I was a teenager, I watched a lot of sitcoms and stand-up comedy on the little TV in my room, often staying up until 2 or 3am. I was exposed to a lot of humour. You could argue this contributed to my 10,000 experience needed to get great at something. If I knew I was working, I probably wouldn’t have done it. 😀
Fast forward to 2012. I found myself in a bad situation, needing new clients to replace the ones that had left (it happens). That’s when I got drunk and wrote the cold email that changed my life.
When I wrote that email, I knew nothing about copywriting hooks or formulas. I used joke formulas instinctively. Spoken comedy such as stand up or sitcoms uses tonality, body language, facial expressions and other audible or visual cues. Writing humour for people reading doesn’t have these options. Somehow, when I wrote my drunk cold email, I knew this.
A lot of the funny lines were syntax-based. They work because of how the sentence is constructed.
I understand that to those without my weird upbringing on comedy, writing funny sentences isn’t natural or reflexive. It’s difficult without ‘the knack.’ Some people just have it.’ Alas, most people don’t.
Enter ChatGPT.
In the beginning, I arrogantly thought “ChatGPT can’t understand humour. It’s too nuanced.”
One day, I decided to see if I could get ChatGPT to learn some of my formulas for syntax-based humour. I taught it a simple one, and it got it.
Then I tried another more complicated technique, and it got that too.
It even understood how the technique worked and why it would be received well by readers.
You can then ensure the examples are relevant to what you’re selling. You can make the lines longer or shorter. You can modify the output to be exactly what you need.
Ok, AI, perhaps I underestimated you.
For syntax-based humour, ChatGPT is effective. Now, not all of my humour is syntax-based, but enough is.
You will be able to train ChatGPT to give you a near unlimited amount of lines based on the techniques you teach it.
